State police confirm off-duty trooper seen in video of alleged assault
A status hearing was held Friday as officials investigate a fight involving an off-duty state police trooper in Boston over the weekend, 5 Investigates has learned.
A video recorded Sunday night on Warrenton Street in Boston’s Theater District shows the trooper allegedly assaulting people. After the video surfaced, the officer was relieved of duty and placed on paid leave, according to state police.
The man in the video wearing a red plaid shirt has been identified as John Perro.
Perro, along with another trooper identified by State Police as Estefania Lopez, have been suspended indefinitely without pay pending an internal affairs investigation after a duty status hearing on Friday.
The Suffolk County District Attorney and Boston police are also investigating this incident.
«The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and the Boston Police Department are investigating this matter. The Massachusetts State Police is assisting in the investigation and has been fully cooperative,» Suffolk County DA spokesperson, Matthew Brelis, said in a statement.
The president of the State Police Association of Massachusetts, the union representing troopers, told 5 Investigates in an email that he is interested in obtaining video from inside one of the clubs «to ensure he’s not the victim here.»
In video of the incident, a woman yells at the off-duty trooper apparently referring to an earlier altercation, saying, «You hit my friend for no reason.»
The off-duty trooper then appears to push the woman and it escalates from there into multiple confrontations with several punches thrown.
In a statement on Wednesday, a state police spokesperson told 5 Investigates, «[Tuesday] the department became aware of a disturbing video depicting an assault committed by a man alleged to be an off-duty member. The actions as depicted in the video are the antithesis of the values and conduct demanded of department members.»
