Peaky Blinders fans were overcome with emotion after it emerged Tommy Shelby had adopted the dog belonging to his long-time rival in the series five premiere last night.
The hit BBC show returned to screens to find crime boss Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his family living in post World War One Britain.
While viewers were given a taste of the drama that is to come this series, it was the appearance of Cyril the dog in the final moments of the show that garnered the most attention online.
Peaky Blinders fans celebrated the return of bulldog Cyril on last night’s season five premiere, after his owner Alfie Salomon (Tom Hardy) was killed last season

Fans were pleased to see that Tommy had kept the dog, who faced an uncertain fate on the season four finale
At the end of series four Tommy killed fellow gang leader Alfie Salomon (Tom Hardy) in an emotional beach scene. The Peaky Blinder insisted that he would not look after Salomon’s beloved Cyril, despite the dying man’s last request.
However in last night’s episode it was revealed Tommy did keep Cyril and the dog is living with him in his stunning stately home.
‘So happy about this! Gorgeous Cyril,’ one wrote.
‘THANK GOD,’ another rejoiced.  ‘This made me so happy. Tommy and Cyril,’ observed one with heart-eyed emojis.

Fans were happy about the short scene at the end of season five’s first episode, were Cyril welcomed Tommy back home
In Hardy’s last scene in season four, Tommy and Alfie confronted each other on a beach, Cyril in tow.
The Jewish gang leader from Camden, revealed he was suffering from skin cancer and wanted Tommy to end his suffering with a mercy kill.
‘You’re going to look after this dog,’ Alfie asked.
‘No,’ Tommy replied.
Alfie revealed during season four he suffered from skin cancer and forced Tommy to mercy-kill him by shooting him in the leg
Tommy left both Alfie and Cyril behind on the beach, meaning the dog’s future remained uncertain at the end of season four
‘Well, his name is Cyril, he’ll be very upset and distressed, so you’ll need to find him someone.
Tommy was hesitant to pull the trigger on his business contact, as Alfie rambled about his illness.
Instants later, Alfie shot Tommy in the leg to force him to pull the trigger. Tommy hit his business partner in the head, killing him instantly.
Tommy then left the beach while Cyril stayed by his dead owner’s side.
The fact that Tommy eventually went back for the dog illustrates the complicated relationship between Murphy’s and Hardy’s character.
Alfie betrayed Tommy twice on the show, yet the man kept trusting him and almost could not bring himself to kill him.
